March 2021

posted by Jennifer Mullin

Well here we are. We find ourselves in March 2021 and on the doorstep of springtime in Maine. I am feeling hopeful once again. I’m hoping you are as well. The sap is running and today we will start boiling it down. We tap five maples each year and it gives us enough sap to make about 1.5 gallons of syrup; just enough for the two of us for the year and to share with our kids.

My veggie seeds are waiting to be direct sown. The planting plan for the potager is drawn up and ready to go. I pruned the Ruby Tears weeping crab this week. Bring on spring!!

In regard to fairs and events this year, it seems the American Craft Fair at Tower Hill Botanic Garden will be a go. The dates are October 23 and 24, 2021. I have yet to hear about any other events, but will keep you posted here and on my FB page: https://www.facebook.com/TMGWildArtandCraft

Stay well, my friends.

Jennifer

Samhain-All Hallows Eve

posted by Jennifer Mullin

Soon the time of the Celtic New Year will be upon us. While the coronavirus may alter the way in which most of us experience Halloween, this magickal celebration of the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark time of the year can still be experienced with joy and anticipation.

We may not see the same numbers of trick-or-treaters this year, but we are prepared for those who do come to our Gingerbread House. The house and yard are decorated and we will be dressed in our costumes and be outdoors, masked and gloved, ready to launch candy down the length of gutter into the waiting bags of trick-or-treaters.

For most of us, Trick-or-treating has become the face of Halloween, but for others of us Halloween, or Samhain, is also a time to say goodbye to the growing season and the times of harvest, to remember loved ones who have passed, and to begin the process of welcoming the dark time. Not “dark” in the sense of “bad,” or “sad,” but dark in the sense of both literal darkness, as the daylight lessens to the shortest day of the year, as well as figurative darkness, when we have the opportunity to go within and reflect, nest, incubate thoughts and dreams, rest and prepare for the return of the sun.

Samhain gives us an opportunity to celebrate with hot mulled cider, apple pie or crisp, home baked bread and stews, a fire in the heat stove or in the fire pit out in the backyard.

Light candles, bring out the wool blankets and shawls. Cozy up in a favorite chair with a hot cup of tea or chocolate, a good book, and a pet or two. Take a walk in the slanting golden light of fall. Scuff your feet in the crunchy leaves. Inhale deeply the scents of dried leaves and woodsmoke.

The gardener in me feels somewhat sad at the end of the growing season. I find that I long for sunshine and green, growing things-especially as fall turns to the long Maine winter. I tend to use this time to plan for next year. I pull out magazines, look at Pinterest and Instagram, and immerse myself in the images of beautiful gardens spaces. I make lists of plants I want and things I need to do, new spaces I want to create.

As an artist and craftswoman who often works with concrete, I await the next year when once again I can get Jemima, my cement mixer, up and running as I craft new concrete Garden Leaves. For now, I turn my thoughts and hands to other artistic endeavors: painting, drawing, working with copper wire, paper craft, polymer clay creations.

What do you do to keep yourself busy at this time of year? Our current reality may be causing many of us to rethink how we spend this time.

The wheel turns. Tomorrow is another day. We are the creators, the authors of our lives. Let us look forward with hope that better days are ahead.

May you and yours be well, in all ways. Be patient. Be kind.

Brightest blessings,

Jennifer

Maine, April 2020

posted by Jennifer Mullin

What strange times we live in. It seems everything is in suspended animation. No forward movement. Everything feels a bit surreal.

I was furloughed yesterday from my job at the pediatric office due to significantly decreased workload. I have never in my life had to apply for unemployment. It is an unsettling experience. I find myself pushed even more off-kilter than I was already. I’m sure I’m not alone in this feeling.

So, how am I going to counter this imbalance? I will continue to make art and craft. I will continue to garden and help to guide others in need of garden plan assistance. Making art, gardening…these are activities that require patience and faith. I say this because the fruit of our labors in both these instances is often not immediate. We make art and craft, we plant and design, in the faith that our vision and our efforts are realized at some future date and time.

It’s difficult sometimes. Hard to remain focused. Hard to keep the faith and not allow self doubt, or anxiety over the current situation to weigh us down and make us immobile. When I feel this way, I sit at my work table in my art room and look out the window at the birds on the feeders. I watch the buds slowly swelling on the trees, and the snowdrops defiantly in bloom despite the 8+ inches of new snow. I listen to soothing ambient music with nature sounds. I look out into the living room at Tom, my fiancé, working online while sitting on the sofa, and I feel so grateful. I’m convinced that maintaining a sense of gratitude is the key to improving and maintaining our mental health.

And so, I will continue to attempt to create and surround myself with beauty; whether it is art, craft, gardens, home décor, written and spoken words, music, laughter…in hopes that this worldwide pandemic will ease and we will all begin to feel more hopeful as we are once again able to look and move forward.

Hoping everyone is safe and well, and sending love and positive energy to each and every one of you.

Brightest Blessings,

Jennifer

Just in Time for Mother’s Day!

posted by Jennifer Mullin

It’s May! You know what that means: more daylight, warmer weather, rain, green grass, tree buds bursting, bulbs and forsythia blooming, Mother’s Day! Yes! May is all those things, but for me May also means the start of Garden Leaf making season!

Today (just in time for Mother’s Day!) is the first day I have been out in the garden making Garden Leaves. The Rhubarb is prime for harvesting their beautiful heart-shaped leaves for my concrete Garden Leaves.

Wild Art and Craft from The Magick Garden is both beautiful, whimsical and functional. Our Bird Nesting Balls, Hummingbird Perches, Clay Flora Prints and Concrete Garden Leaves make the perfect beautiful and unique gifts for the beloved Moms in your life. No two items from The Magick Garden are exactly alike. As in nature, and because each and every item is handcrafted, every piece of art and craft is different.

Wild Art and Craft from The Magick Garden can be found at the shops below. We hope you will purchase one of our made-with-Love gifts for your loved one this Mother’s Day!

Yuletide Blessings

posted by Jennifer Mullin

Yuletide Blessings to All!

The wheel turns again and we find ourselves entering the dark, quiet months of the year.  It is time to look inward, to re-evaluate the past year and to plan for the new.  Time to gather with loved ones.  Time to give gifts that are meaningful and expressive of our love and gratitude for those we care so much about.  I hope you will consider giving a handcrafted gift from The Magick Garden.  By doing so, you give an object that has been made with the love that comes from being able to do work that is pure joy.  You give a gift that has been made locally, one at a time (not mass-produced), and therefore with the assurance that no two will ever be exactly alike.

Small Garden Leaves, Bird Nesting Balls and Hummingbird Perches are affordable and not only make unique gifts, but are easy to ship to your loved ones.

My sincerest Thanks to all who have purchased a piece of Wild Art and Craft over the year, either directly from me or from one of the shops kind enough to sell my art.

Brightest Blessings,

~Jennifer
